When you're a new turkey hunter, it can be difficult to judge the quality of your calling. It's also good to be able to hear real turkeys talk, in person. I'll often find private land that holds wild turkeys that like to hang out near the road and find a place to park and practice calling to these birds. Remember, respect others' private land and do not trespass. If the property owner asks you to leave, apologize and be respectful. Don't do this on lands you hunt, especially public land. You do not want to educate those birds! This video was a few years back, and this technique has helped me improve some. Yes, my mouth-calling still sucks, but I keep working on it. I have killed a few birds using just a mouth call.
Road scouting can be a useful tool when hunting in new areas. Here I located a tom and a hen using a short road to breed. The hen finished and, oddly, came toward my truck as if she were curious about me.
This kid worked hard for two years to get his first turkey, and it finally happened!
There's few words that can describe how you feel when this happens right before sunrise when you're turkey hunting! You have to experience it for yourself.
I've had several people tell me they do not use turkey wings because they are too hard to pluck. Here I show you the easy way to remove them, it takes only a few seconds and very little effort. So don't throw away those wild turkey wings!
